Fitness and Nutrition Tip of the Day: The Peanut Butter Trap!

Stay away from anything that is 'Partially Hydrogenated!'

Physicists add Hydrogen atoms to polyunsaturated fats in order to make them completely saturated. This literally means that they are taking perfectly good fats and intentionally turning them into a new, man-made product that is harmful for you! The difference is evident when you compare Skippy/Jiff/Peter Pan to organic peanut butters! The man-made product is solid, while the natural peanut butter has a layer of oil that collects at the top of the jar.

Why on earth would anyone do this?! And why would so MANY companies follow this trend? People, in general, are lazy. Laziness in a high percentage of humans yields a demand for convenience. To have to stir and refrigerate something takes more time and effort than having something solid that can be left out of the icebox. Also, let us not forget the negative connotation the word "fat" has adopted over the years! When we see a large pool of oil on foods, we KNOW there's a large amount of fat content. Unfortunately, not all fats are created equal. Even MORE unfortunately, not many people are aware of or care about this.

Foods that will unnaturally remain solid at room temperature will do the exact same in your arteries! Solid peanut butter is sticky! Just ask your puppy!

Corresponding Fitness Tip?

Go to your cabinet. Toss out your Skippy. Go to the grocery store. Park in the farthest-most spot (EXTRA CREDIT: Walk or bike if you're feeling frisky/ambitious!). Buy your new, polyunsaturated, natural peanut butter. Walk the scenic route around the parking lot to your lonely car in the corner. Stir the living hell out of that PB when you get home. Pop it in fridge. Do a happy dance! You just burned calories AND bought a healthy product that'll last you a good while and transform your lifestyle!

2 birds. 1 stone. WIN!

Happy arteries! :)
